You can use this tutorial to make anime like-fire or ice in Photoshop!
This tutorial requires using a dark background. This is a Photo Shop Tutorial that will work on Photoshop 5.5 and higher.
Here's the three color pallete I use in this tutorial.

This tutorial requires using a dark background. This is a Photo Shop Tutorial that will work on Photoshop 5.5 and higher.
Here's the three color pallete I use in this tutorial.

- 1. Make a new file (Ctrl+N) at 640 x 480 pixels wide. It can be any size you want, but for this tutorial, start off small.
- 2. Start off with a black/very dark background. Fire seems to look better with that nice contrast.

- 3. Create a new layer over top of your black background. (Shift+Ctrl+N)
- 4. Choose the darkest color you want your fire to be. You may use the colors I used, or make your own.
- 5. Using the Lasso Tool or the Path Tool, create a selection something like what I did. I prefer the Lasso Tool because you can add more and more messy polygons and lines as you go. Make is messy! Fire isn't just a bunch of straight line. But, be sure everything is pointing in the same direction.
- When using the lasso tool, set the mask to->
This will allow you to add more selections without erasing the previous selections. To erase from a selection, click the third button.

- 6. Fill this layer selection in by selecting the darkest color of the fire palette and going Edit->Fill.
- Set the Opacity to 100% and click okay. You have your first layer of fire!

- 7. Create a new Layer and repeat the process with the middle color. Make the middle color's fire lesser than the first layers.
- Using the selection tool in the same way, try it mimic what you see in the picture here. If you like the fire you have created here, then stop. If you want more effects, keep going.

- 8. Do the same thing for the lightest color, making less and less fire. Do not put too much of the light color or the fire will look awkward.

- 9. Most times, the fire can be left as it is, but to add more of a glowing effect, select the middle layer and go Layer->Layer Style->Blending Options. Set the layer style to Outer Glow. For the glow color, select the exact color you used for the middle fire color. Use the settings I used in the example picture. If the picture is larger than 640x480, then you will have to make the "Size" settings according to what looks good for the image's size.

- 10. Do the same with the light layer. Don't bother with the darkest layer. It didn't appear right to use the glow on it. Try it to see what you think though.

- 11. Flatten the entire image (Ctrl+E).
- 12. Duplicate the merged layer (Layer->Duplicate)
- 13. Using the top layer, go to Filter->Blur->Motion Blur
- 14. Set the distance to 42 %.

- 15. Set the blurred layer to Lighten. Merge the layers (Ctrl+E) and there's the fire!

- To change it to ice
- 1. Go Image->Adjustments->Hue/Saturation. Follow the exact setting I have placed here.

- To change it to ice
- 3. Go Image->Adjustments->Brightness/Contrast and put in the settings I have here.

Now you have Fire and Ice! Play around with settings to get more effects! Try making magical colored fire by changing the Hue/Saturation settings! For larger images, you will need to tweek the settings a bit from the ones I have specified. Have fun!
